#BlackLivesMatter co-founder Alicia Garza will deliver LaGuardia Community College’s 45th Commencement Address to the more than 1,500 members of the LaGuardia Community College Class of 2017. The ceremony will begin at 4pm ET on June 8, 2017 at Barclays Center.
The alumni speaker is Lorelei Salas, Commissioner of the NYC Dept. of Consumer Affairs.

Notable graduates includes:
- Remy Patrick Lavilla who moved to the US in 2015 at age 17 after Typhoon Haiyan devastated his hometown in The Philippines. He’ll receive his associate degree in accounting; this fall he’ll begin pursuing his bachelor’s in economics at Columbia University. During his time at LaGuardia, he was awarded numerous awards and honors, including ThinkGeek’s National Innovation for Tomorrow Award. He will give the 2017 Class Speech.
- Verdia Hart, age 72, who’s traveling to NYC from her home in South Carolina to receive her associate degree in liberal arts. Her six children and a handful of her 12 grandchildren will be in attendance to watch her pick-up her degree.
