Campus News — the all-purpose student newspaper that hits 37 colleges with a print edition and the world with an online edition — is announcing its first ever journalism and writing awards contest, the Bylines. The awards are for any college student — community college, four-year college or graduate school — who wrote journalism or creative writing in the 2017-18 academic year, either for any student newspaper/publication, college web site or journalism/writing class.

Students may compete in the following categories:

  1. Best Feature Story (Community College; submit 1 story from the 2017-18 academic year)
  2. Best Feature Story (Four-Year College; submit 1 story from the 2017-18 academic year)
  3. Best News Story (Community College; submit 1 story from the 2017-18 academic year)
  4. Best News Story (Four-Year College; submit 1 story from the 2017-18 academic year)
  5. Writer of the Year (Community College; submit 5 stories in any journalistic style from the 2017-18 academic year)
  6. Writer of the Year (Four-Year College; submit 5 stories in any journalistic style from the 2017-18 academic year)
  7. Writer of the Year (Graduate School; submit 5 stories in any journalistic style from the 2017-18 academic year)
  8. Best Print Layout Design (all student newspapers; one person or staff; submit a hard copy or PDF of your 1 best edition from 2017-2018)
  9. Best Web Layout Design (all official college news sites; one person or staff; submit a URL)
  10. Creative Writer of the Year (all colleges; submit no more than 10 pages of your most creative work from 2017-18)

Works will be judged by Darren Johnson, a communications instructor and longtime journalist and creative writer, and other editorial staff at Campus News. Trophies will be awarded to the winner in each category. Second, third and honorable mention awards will also be given.

“Winning a Byline Award will be a great honor for student journalists and writers, and surely be a great addition to their resumes and portfolios for their further study and employment,” Johnson said. “This contest will be no-holds-barred and judged with the highest levels of objectivity and integrity. Winners will have truly earned their byline trophies.”

Students may submit as many applications as they wish. The cost is only $8 per entry (this is the most affordable student journalism contest in the world!); entrants will be e-invoiced after submission. All entries must arrive by May 15, 2018. Winners will be announced by May 31, 2018, via the Campus News web site.
