There are very few places where high school and college students can get learn “real-life” success principles. But, thousands, from around the world, have attend the non-profit, LEAP Foundation – a one-week educational, motivational, leadership program co-founded by celebrity Dr. Bill Dorfman to give students the tools they need to succeed.
Now in its sixth year, LEAP’s week-long program will be held at UCLA from July 27th to August 2nd with more than half of deserving students from around the world attending on scholarship. Students are encouraged to apply for the leadership program through July 16th via www.leapfoundation.com.
“Dr. Bill” is most recognized as the featured dentist on ABC’s hit show, “Extreme Makeover,” and the Emmy winning daytime talk show, “The Doctors.” For nearly 30 years, Dr. Bill has been making Hollywood smile, with A-list patients that include, Usher, Eva Longoria, the Osbournes, Jessica Simpson, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Hugh Jackman, Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan (and some celebrity friends do attend the LEAP event) – but his real passion is giving back.
Through LEAP, Dr. Bill has helped students gain a head start in life through seminars, workshops, motivational speakers and mentor roundtables that teach them everything from business etiquette and time management to first impressions and how to ace the interview.
Below is a Q&A with Dr. Bill.
How many students will the LEAP Foundation serve at UCLA this summer? How many have you served in the six years?
Our program has been steadily growing over the last six years. This year’s program will host nearly 450 students at UCLA this summer, bringing us to a total of over 1,600 individuals who have attended the program, a number of which have attended multiple times.
Where do students come from? Any from the East Coast?
We have participants who come much farther than the East Coast! Our students come from all over the US, Canada, Australia, France, Belgium, South Africa, Morocco, Senegal, Israel, and Bulgaria. The curriculum taught at LEAP is universal in its truth regardless of what part of the world you come from.
What could a community college student learn at LEAP?
One of the great things about LEAP is that the principles we teach are applicable to people from all backgrounds. Regardless of your current standing and accessible resources, our program emphasizes tried and true techniques to becoming successful. It doesn’t matter if you’re still in high school, going to a community college, or attending an Ivy League school, LEAP gives you the tools to accelerate your current potential in order to achieve your goals! By attending the program, you will learn how to effectively use personality profiling, core values and goals, time management, finding mentors, how to stand out in a competitive job market, and the importance of gratitude.
Where do you see LEAP going in the years to come?
The support for LEAP from everyone that sees the program is tremendous. Many of the alumni students are eager to continue learning and growing in the LEAP principals. In addition to adding additional programs throughout the year, the core curriculum of LEAP could easily be translated into advanced workshops for older students with growing needs. There is a lot of room to create continuing education that students can plug into outside of the current program. We have already started a free monthly news letter and podcast for alumni and friends of the LEAP program to help keep students on track and accountable. Readers can sign up for both at www.LEAPfoundation.com.
