The headlining event of the semester is “One Love: An Evening with John Leguizamo” at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, in the Jorgensen Athletic/Event Center Field House at the College’s Utica Campus. Tickets are $30 general, $20 for MVCC employees, and free for MVCC students. Leguizamo, an Emmy Award-winning actor, voice actor, stand-up comedian, producer, playwright, and screenwriter, first came to prominence on the lecture circuit touring the nation’s colleges and stages with his one-man show “Ghetto Klown,” which traced his life from growing up in Queens through his avant-garde theater origins in the 1980s, to his film career and beyond. Leguizamo is now taking his entire story — the lessons he’s learned, the characters he’s encountered, his passion for education, his struggles against racism and poverty — to audiences around the country.
The Gin Blossoms will perform at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, in Schafer Theater, Information Technology Building, at the Utica Campus. On Wednesday, Oct. 3, Netflix Co-Founder (and Hamilton College alumnus) Marc Randolph will give the lecture, “Start Something, Build Something, Do Something,” at 10 a.m. in the Jorgensen Athletic/Event Center Field House. As a veteran Silicon Valley entrepreneur, advisor, and investor, Randolph co-founded Netflix, the online movie and television streaming service, serving as its founding CEO, executive producer of the website, and as a member of the board of directors until his retirement in 2004. His career as an entrepreneur spans more than four decades, having been the founder of more than six other successful startups, a mentor to hundreds of early-stage entrepreneurs, and an investor in numerous tech ventures. On Wednesday, Oct. 24, Alexis Jones, founder of the nonprofit organization I AM THAT GIRL and the program ProtectHer, will give the lecture “Be a Good Human: Preventing Sexual Harassment & Inspiring Diversity and Inclusivity,” at 7 p.m. in Schafer Theater, Information Technology Building, at the Utica Campus. Tickets are $10 general, $5 for MVCC employees, and free for MVCC students. “Be a Good Human” is a solution-based response to the pandemic levels of sexual assault springing up around the country. In this talk, Jones will inspire a new company culture, not by pointing fingers, blaming, and shaming, but by encouraging both men and women to be an integral and tangible part of the solution moving forward in order to create a new normal, where all humans are treated with dignity and respect. Michael Glabicki and Dirk Miller of the band Rusted Root will perform a Listening Room Concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, in Festine Auditorium, Plumley Complex, at the Rome Campus. Rusted Root, the multi-platinum band out of Pittsburgh, evolved around front man Glabicki’s distinct sound and grew into a musical entity that has thrived in a non- genre-specific category all its own.
