On Friday, Sept. 21, Mohawk Valley Community College will host the event “Colorful Girls Rock” from 5 to 8 p.m. in Alumni College Center room 116 at the Utica Campus. Reality star and former model Anivia Cruz of BET’s “Killer Curves” will join local community members as they discuss beauty, the imperfection of beauty, and the cost of beauty (cosmetic surgery, Botox, make-up, designer clothing).
Patricia Washington, coordinator for the College in Prison New Directions program, will act as the moderator for the open discussion on the cost of beauty along with Cruz and MVCC students.
The event will also include entertainment and a chance for attendees to meet Cruz. Admission is $5 general, $2 for MVCC employees, and free for MVCC students. Advance tickets can be purchased at http://www.mvcc.edu/tickets, and cash-only tickets will be available at the door at the event.
Cruz was a highly sought-after plus model represented by Wilhelmina Models and holds a worldwide reputation and background in haute couture and commercial modeling. She has appeared on major fashion runways and shows including “The View,” “The Today Show,” “Iyanla Fix My Life,” and BET’s “The Truth Series.” She also has been featured on Essence Magazine, “O – The Oprah Magazine,” and was the face of the Southpole Plus clothing line. Cruz continues to work on many projects in fashion, modeling, acting, and public speaking.
One of her personal missions has been to help young women deal with self-esteem issues. In her book “Scar Tissue,” Cruz explains how beauty was really pain for her during her career in modeling and how it’s not worth sacrificing one’s life and health to attain what’s unattainable via plastic surgery. Through the telling of her personal journey, Cruz hopes to make her readers understand this and feel empowered to bring their inner beauty to the outside.
