Reformed extremist and Global Peace Advocate Christian Picciolini will give the lecture “White American Youth: My Descent into America’s Most Violent Hate Movement — and How I Got Out” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in Schafer Theater, Information Technology Building, at Mohawk Valley Community College’s Utica Campus. Admission is $10 general, $5 for MVCC employees, and free for MVCC students.
Picciolini, an Emmy Award-winning director and producer, published author, and TEDx speaker, is a reformed extremist who left a violent hate movement and began the painstaking process of rebuilding his life. His involvement in, and eventual exit from, the early American white supremacist skinhead movement is chronicled in his memoir, “White American Youth: My Descent into America’s Most Violent Hate Movement — And How I Got Out.” In 2009, he co-founded Life After Hate, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping communities and organizations implement long-term solutions that counter racism and violent extremism. As featured on “Fresh Air” and the TEDx stage, Picciolini’s story offers a look inside the world of violent hate groups by a one-time white supremacist leader who, shaken by a personal tragedy, realized the error of his ways and abandoned his destructive life to become an anti-hate activist.
