Mohawk Valley Community College has announced the addition of a new Associate of Science degree program in Sports Management, a growing field with many transfer and career opportunities.
This Associate of Science (AS) degree — approved on Nov. 5 by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) — will be offered beginning in the Spring 2019 semester, which begins Jan. 23, on MVCC’s Utica Campus. This degree has the potential to be a business/liberal arts program with specific core courses in sports management disciplines. The curriculum is designed to let graduates be successful in any sports management or business-related transfer program, regardless of the transfer school chosen. Coursework can include economics and accounting, as well as a basis in various areas of general education/liberal arts. The program is intended for students who plan to transfer to another college or university, perhaps continuing through a graduate degree or higher.
The program is a perfect fit for MVCC, with its state-of-the-art Jorgensen Athletic and Events Center and qualified faculty, which provide an excellent arrangement to support the program. The College’s modernized Field House and Fitness Center will allow students to gain hands-on experience in a real-world setting. The Athletic Department also offers 19 intercollegiate sports, and built-in practicums will provide the opportunity to learn key skills by working with these teams, which have produced many national champions.
There are a number of universities available for transfer, including SUNY Cortland, SUNY Canton, SUNY Brockport, SUNY Fredonia, Cazenovia College, and St. John Fisher College. Career opportunities include sports event manager, personal agent, athletic director, or an executive in businesses that support professional and amateur sports. Other venues could include fitness centers, recreation centers, and ice arenas, as well as sporting goods sales and marketing.
