In an effort to inspire, educate, and empower girls between the ages of 11 and 18, several members of the Columbia-Greene Community College faculty, student body, and staff participated in the Girls World Expo — a national, touring event that traveled to Albany, N.Y., on Sunday, Dec. 9.
C-GCC served as the No Girl Left Behind sponsor, which allowed girls and their parents or caretakers to attend the expo at no cost. The event also welcomed C-GCC Associate Professor of Psychology and Sociology Barbie Shaffer to provide opening remarks relative to the expo’s overall theme of fearlessness, overcoming obstacles, and relying on a strong network of friends, family, and colleagues.
“This Girls Expo is all about taking chances, taking advantage of opportunities, and learning how to put yourself out there,” said Shaffer. “The best defense against fear and obstacles is a good support system, so look to the girls to your left and to your right; these are the people who can help you get where you want to be.”
C-GCC students Rachel Arnwine, Hailey Beaumont, Julie Klugo, and Olivia Shaffer volunteered their time to staff the college’s information table and ‘selfie booths’ for attendees, joining members of the faculty, admissions department, and public relations and marketing department.
This is the second year the expo has traveled to the Capital Region, and more than 750 registrants were in attendance. For more information, visit girlsworldexpo.com or SUNYcgcc.edu.
