Podcasting from the road

By Darren Johnson
Campus News

I’m not sure why, exactly, but I’ve re-started podcasting from the road; I’m on the highways a lot for Campus News and have lots of idle time, so to speak. Perhaps it’s because I’ve become disillusioned by social media, and recently gave up Facebook; my time has been freed up!

I use a stereophonic microphone and often riff on topics that appeared in the print newspaper edition of Campus News, or riff on the media in general. Often I talk about bad TV shows. Recently I riffed on a particularly dark episode of “My 600-lb Life.” (MP3)

You can subscribe to the podcast via your phone’s podcast app. Type “CampusXM” in the search field, and then click subscribe. (Have an Apple product? Click here to get it on iTunes.)

Then you can listen whatever way you want. Because CampusXM is recorded from a car, it may make sense to listen to it in your car. Or you can listen on an elliptical at the gym. At a funeral? Or anywhere!

Or you can just listen by clicking these links:

  • Here I relate my recent, frustrating efforts to downgrade my cable TV plan and confess that “Dr. Phil” is my guilty pleasure. (33 minutes)
  • Here I talk about that dark episode of “My 600-lb Life,” “Handmaid’s Tale” and “Flint Town.” (53 minutes)
  • Here I talk about corruption — both political and academic (the college admissions scandal). (33 minutes)
  • Here I talk about my dysfunctional childhood and more on “My 600-lb Life.” (33 minutes)
  • Find more on CampusXM.com.

I had podcasted a good deal a few years ago, and then stopped as social media started eating up more of my time. But recently I realized that posting to social media really only helps the social media companies. To have one’s own venue has much more permanence and integrity. And, anyway, most everything on social media is vapid and/or negative. I hate trolls!

So take a listen to the podcast.

And There’s a Book, Too
Also, to understand where I’m coming from better, buy my book, “Prof. Mule.” You can get it on Amazon cheap and read it on any device.

It’s about a harried adjunct instructor — on the road in New York State — and how he (illicitly) makes ends meet.

You can buy the book here, or read more on http://profmule.com.

You may be wary about reading an ebook on your phone, but it’s super easy to do and the pages fly by, once you get used to this style of reading. You can control the font size and read at your leisure. The device will remember where you left off.

So, give it a try. What do you have to lose? Here is “Prof. Mule” on Amazon.
