Herkimer College has appointed Charles Maxson as the new head coach of the men’s and women’s track and field team. Former head coach Sharon Howell announced her retirement this summer, having coached the Generals to numerous titles and accolades over her 38-year tenure.
Maxson, of Ilion, NY, has been assistant coach for the team since 2014. Over the past four seasons, he and Howell helped lead the athletes to two regional titles—one in 2016 and one in 2018—and produced 14 All Americans and claimed 16 national championship titles. He serves as president of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Track & Field Coaches Association.
In addition to his work with the College, Maxson has been a teacher at Gregory B. Jarvis Middle School for more than 20 years. He has a history of fueling a passion for sports in his students, currently serving as head coach of the boys varsity cross country team and as the former girls junior varsity and varsity volleyball coach at Central Valley Academy.
Maxson earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Roberts Wesleyan College and a master’s degree from SUNY Cortland.
