That was the opening of contemporary, New York-based multidisciplinary artist, Chin Chih (CC) Yang’s new exhibit at the Queensborough Community College Art Gallery.

In the exhibit, “Reclaiming the Vision,” on view through October 20, CC Yang invites us to respond to world conflicts, natural disasters and the twists and turns of modern communications that chip away at our identity.

The artist told Campus News: “My show is called ‘Reclaiming the Vision’ for two distinct reasons. One is based on the reclaiming and upcycling of our reusable waste products, and another is to revisit my vision of increased human awareness of our impact on the global environment. In this show, I display nine ongoing art pieces.”

What’s up with the calligraphy?

“The meaning of the calligraphy I produced is an abstract rendering of the characters for ‘love’ and ‘beauty.’ Amidst a wave of new technology, I feel there is an abundance of apathy. I see people rushing around, with an abnormal focus on capitalism. There is not enough face-to-face interaction.

“Therefore, we need more love and beauty in our lives,” he said.

Of the nine pieces, which one does he like most?

“My favorite piece in the show is the one titled ‘Amazon,’ about the horrific burning of the rainforests in Brazil. It seems like most people are unaware of this disaster and don’t care about it. I constantly think about my family, and how they will be affected by the forest’s destruction. Not only does the ‘Amazon’ piece refer to burning forests, but it refers to other raging fires such as forest fires,” he added.

His work has been highlighted in The New York Times, the Taipei Times, CBS, Time Out New York, Flavorpill and Art Asia Pacific. NY1 featured him in their celebration of Asian-American artists with a profile of Chin Chih and the vivid works he makes out of mixed media.
