Governor Cuomo’s 2020 State of the State address included a proposal to expand free college tuition to more middle-class families, by raising the Excelsior Scholarship eligibility threshold to $150,000 of adjusted gross family income, from $125,000.
In response to this proposal, SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson, Ph.D., said:
“On behalf of The State University of New York, I am proud to offer my strong support to Governor Cuomo. The Governor knows, as we do, the changing landscape on the horizon, one in which brings forth the promise of economic growth for states like New York that continue to invest in our people, our infrastructure, and in protecting our environment.
“We are extremely excited about the Governor’s proposals to expand the first in the nation Excelsior Scholarship program, boost workforce development training across our state, and make a further financial commitment to higher education opportunity programs. College is indeed essential, and more New Yorkers will have access through this even stronger support.”
In addition, Columbia-Greene Community College President Carlee R. Drummer, Ph.D., commented:
“We applaud any plan designed to expand educational opportunities for the residents in our state, and that’s what the new proposed income-threshold aims to do. Whether entering the workforce or moving on to a four-year college or university, three out of five CoGreene students graduate debt-free. The idea that an even larger group of students could take advantage of this benefit is an exciting prospect and we will follow the Governor’s proposal closely as it moves toward approval in April.”
