The City University of New York has recorded a robust increase in enrollment for the newly opened summer session, driven by students of all ages looking to take advantage of CUNY’s diverse online offerings. Enrollment for the summer session stood at 76,688, signaling an increase of 17 percent over the enrollment data reported at the same time last year.
“The growth of our summer enrollment is a product of CUNY’s first-class academics, extraordinary affordability and the outstanding outcomes our graduates can expect, qualities that have never been more highly sought,” said Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez. “We are thrilled to provide access to high-quality distance education programs in these uncertain times, and grateful that students of all ages are recognizing the tremendous opportunities that CUNY can offer as they proceed along their educational journeys and we continue to expand our digital footprint.”
The enrollment figures reflect a snapshot of CUNY’s 2020 summer session enrollment, which opened on May 26, runs through Aug. 18 and is being conducted exclusively via distance education format, in accordance with New York State Education Department guidance.
The summer session consists of 17 terms and thousands of online courses offered by CUNY’s community and senior colleges and its graduate and professional schools. The affordable course offerings include hundreds with no textbook costs.
The eclectic offerings include a course at Hostos Community College that can lead to career opportunities in nursing; a class at Borough of Manhattan Community College about criminal justice issues that affect urban communities; an introductory course from the CUNY School of Professional Studies on basic tenets of public health and epidemiology; another, from the CUNY School of Public Health, that examines structural biases and factors such as race, class and gender that stratify personal and public health outcomes; and many thousands more.
Enrollment remains open through the beginning of the final session in August. For more information, visit here.
