Nine CUNY campuses serve as polling sites

The City University of New York is opening its doors to help New Yorkers perform their civic duty and vote by providing nine polling sites in this year’s presidential election, underscoring the role CUNY plays in helping communities to actively participate in the democratic process.

“CUNY is proud to play a role in helping communities throughout the city fulfill their civic responsibilities and claim their seat at democracy’s table,” said Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez. “As a student of history, I have long understood that the fight to make sure that underrepresented groups have their say is often won at the ballot box, which is why I’m so happy that CUNY is able to help as a community partner to advance civic engagement and democracy in this year’s presidential election by offering its campuses as polling sites.”

CUNY’s Hunter College, Brooklyn College, New York City College of Technology, Queens College, LaGuardia Community College and York College have already accommodated hordes of early voters at polling sites on their grounds since the start of early voting on Saturday. The University is also stepping up to meet the challenge of Election Day on Nov. 3 by hosting polling sites at Hunter College, Brooklyn College, The Graduate Center, Hostos Community College and Medgar Evers College to make it as convenient as possible for every New Yorker to get to the polls.

Information on where to find the nearest polling site to vote can be found on this NYC Board of Elections search page.

CUNY has also worked to promote student awareness in the voting process through CUNY Votes, a comprehensive, non-partisan initiative that facilitates voter registration and voter participation efforts through campus-based initiatives, external partnerships and University-wide campaigns. To increase awareness, CUNY campuses established voter registration web pages and organized a variety of online events, direct email campaigns to students, debate watch parties and Instagram Live forums that stressed the importance of voting and civic engagement. More than 20 student organizations and student government associations used their communication platforms to further emphasize the message and make students aware of voter registration procedures and deadlines. CUNY’s John Jay College will host two virtual events this week including a voter awareness forum and a Get Out the Vote pep rally.
