As of this writing — after a scathing report on the evils of Facebook on “60 Minutes” last night right after the big Packers/Steelers game — the social media site is totally down.
And who cares?
You do know the Internet existed just fine before Facebook and social media.
Actually, in many ways, it was better.
We could go directly to sites, as opposed to letting algorithms play with our brains and pick sites for us.
Want to read your local paper? Just go directly to the URL — you don’t have to passively scroll on Facebook to see if your local paper is included, after your rants from right-wing Uncle Al and pictures of food from Lorraine, who you kind of knew in fifth grade.
Why do we let social media pick for us what we should see?
As far as correspondence, before Facebook, message boards were the thing. Sure, they were more anonymous — but real citizens (for no pay) administered them, so some were really good.
Social media forced search engines to also mine and use data against us — they had to compete.
But organic searches were much more honest a decade or two ago.
So, as of this writing, Facebook is down. Instagram and other Facebook-related sites, too. Great. We could all use a break.
Use this time to go directly to your favorite URL from the past — I’ll bet it still works.
Go to a great site run by real people who live in your community. People who don’t track you or gaslight you with algorithms.
Breathe!
Get rid of Facebook for good!
