City University of New York Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez and Lehman College President Fernando Delgado welcomed The Duke of Gloucester (pictured, fifth from right), the Patron of the St. George’s Society of New York (SGSNY), to Lehman College on Oct. 25 to thank the charity for awarding $1.4 million in scholarship funding to 450 CUNY students since 2008, including $1.2 million to more than 400 Lehman students. The scholarships are for students who trace their heritage to one of the 56 Commonwealth nations, including Jamaica, Ghana, Nigeria and Trinidad. The CUNY students are primarily first-generation college students of color and 70 percent female.
Founded on St. George’s Day in 1770, SGSNY predates the Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War and is the second oldest charitable organization in the city. One of its charitable programs supports final year students who need financial assistance in finishing their college careers at Lehman College, Hunter College, Queens College, College of Staten Island and New York City College of Technology. The society’s relationship with CUNY expanded beyond Lehman to include the other campuses in 2017.
“The importance of helping our students remove financial barriers so they can finish their collegiate careers cannot be overstated,” said Chancellor Matos Rodríguez. “We were delighted to mark their achievements with The Duke of Gloucester today and we thank St. George’s Society of New York for enabling our students to achieve their academic goals and fulfill their educational dreams.”
The Duke of Gloucester heard from students supported through the scholarship program as part of the event.
