Five Towns College readies for commencement; Wyclef Jean honored

On Saturday May 18, 2019 at 10 a.m., 125 students will walk the stage at the Five Towns College 45th Annual Commencement Exercises and receive their graduation diplomas in the Eugene Orloff Auditorium at the Half Hollow Hills High School East located at 50 Vanderbilt Parkway, Dix Hills, NY 11746.

In addition to recognizing accomplished students, faculty and staff, Five Towns College historically honors esteemed professionals who are an inspiration not only to the graduates but also to society at large. This May 2019 is no exception. The Distinguished Honorary Doctorate Degrees of 2019 will be conferred to Jeannel Wyclef Jean, (Doctor of Music-Mus.D.), solo superstar and founding member of the popular music group, the Fugees, and to Vanessa R. Tyler, (Doctor of Humane Letters-D. H. L.), Emmy award winning and six-time Emmy nominated Reporter/Anchor.

Five Towns College is privileged to have Wyclef Jean participate in the 2019 Commencement Exercises. Best known for his music with the hip-hop group the Fugees, the musician, writer, performer, producer, and former FTC student guided the trio to release the Billboard chart topping album The Score in 1996. With the smash hit “Killing me Softly,” the album was certified six times platinum.

Five Towns College is also privileged to present an Honorary Doctorate to Vanessa Tyler, the Executive Producer of The Spot with Vanessa Tyler and weekend news anchor for FiOs1 – a 24-hour news operation. She was a former WPIX-TV Reporter as well with a long-standing record of outstanding accomplishments.

Five Towns College is proud to announce that Amira Khan is the Class of 2019 Valedictorian. She will be receiving a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree (B.B.A.) in Business Management/Audio Recording Technology. Upon graduation, Ms. Khan has a few job opportunities, including being part of a production team for a live sound company, working as a photographer for a web e-commerce company or as a production assistant at an entertainment company.

The College is also proud to announce that this year’s Salutatorian is Jessica Hancock, who will be receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree (B.F.A.) in Theatre Arts. “Jessica is a dedicated, hard-working and talented student who will go far in life. It was a delight to work with her on the end of the year play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and a great way to culminate her time at Five Towns College,” shares Dr. David Krasner, Theatre Arts Division Chair.
