Campus News, in its 15th year, is an independent student newspaper that distributes in three ways:
1. It’s New York route to racks at SUNY and CUNY community colleges.
2. Via scores of honor boxes on the streets of New York City.
3. And via this web site.
Stories are aimed at college students, faculty and staff.
About the Print Edition
Campus News is different than other college publications because it has a complex, multi-campus media distribution network servicing the people the project aims to help.
Our work is very public and what we do won’t be done in a vacuum. It will be participatory journalism at its purest.
We go the the campuses, find the stories, and then can publish them, helping that campus as well as dozens of other campuses where we also distribute – which may have similar problems that need fleshing out.
There is no other media outlet doing this, serving these underserved populations in a mass-media kind of way.
Campus News was founded during the 2009-10 academic year when community college journalism instructor and school newspaper adviser Darren Johnson maxed out his credit card and funded a paper that would hit many New York Metro two-year campuses.
The paper survived and actually grew as other papers called it quits, including most two-year college papers in the region.
It survived the rapid growth of social media, which decimated so many papers because of its usurping of ad revenues.
It also survived the pandemic, when most area community colleges were shuttered, by creating an aggressive news box program on the streets of New York City and getting the necessary permits, so that readers still could get the paper.
In 2024, Campus News was selected to be on the NYC Mayor’s highly vetted Ethnic & Community Media list, denoting its authenticity and diversity efforts.
