Rockland Community College student veterans are proud to host the second annual “Trunk or Treat” on Friday, October 26. The outdoor event is set for 6 to 9 pm in the RCC Fieldhouse parking lot. Enjoy a worry-free evening that is safe, fun and filled with treats for the kids.
Children are encouraged to come dressed up in their Halloween costumes and participants are asked to place candy and other Halloween treats in the open trunks of their vehicles, which are decorated with festive – and maybe ghoulish – seasonal adornments. Children go from “trunk to trunk” as they would from home to home in the traditional trick-or-treat ritual. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes, and children can also have fun in the bounce house on site. Freshly popped popcorn, hot apple cider and coffee will be available for purchase. Cost of the event is $3 per child or $5 per car, with proceeds going to benefit RCC’s Battle Buddy Center/Veterans Lounge.
The lounge is an on-campus ‘home’ for RCC’s student veterans, allowing them to interact with fellow vets, study, take part in social or recreational activities, or just relax in a sun-filled space. Current needs include a computer, printer, and necessary supplies.
“The Trunk or Treat is an idea that some of our student veterans came up with last year,” said Jonathan Barnwell, Coordinator of Judicial and Veterans Affairs. “Since many of them have children, they want their children to be in a safe, secure environment. I was astounded with the turnout last year for our first Trunk or Treat. It was awesome to see so many cars decorated. This semester we have more than 120 veterans enrolled and approximately 30 percent have small children, so hopefully, we’ll have a good turnout.”
