The SUNY Ulster Visiting Artist Series brings the work of Martin Wittfooth to the Muroff Kotler Visual Arts Gallery from September 12 to October 18. A slide lecture and opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 12, at 7:00 p.m. in the College Lounge, Vanderlyn Hall. This event is free and open to the public.
Martin Wittfooth’s paintings, drawings, installations, and sculptural works investigate themes of industry and nature, as well as human influence on the environment. Many of his works explore the theme of shamanism – rituals and practices as old as our species – through which we have attempted to dialogue with both the nature outside of ourselves and the nature within. His creative language uses the combination of allegory and symbolism to convey visual narratives.
Wittfooth was born in Toronto, Canada in 1981. He currently splits his time between two studios, one in Savannah, Georgia and another in the Hudson Valley. He earned his MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 2008. Wittfooth’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, including the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, Akron Art Museum in Ohio, and La Halle Saint-Pierre in Paris, with solo exhibitions in New York City, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Montreal. His paintings have also appeared in numerous publications, including Juxtapoz, American Art Collector, and Vice. He has had cover features in New American Paintings, HiFructose, and American Artist Magazine.
The Muroff-Kotler Visual Arts Gallery at SUNY Ulster serves as a center for creative activity at the College and within the community. It also functions as an environment for teaching, performing, and exhibiting. The Muroff Kotler Visual Arts Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and is closed on college holidays.

Then on Friday September 13 at 8 p.m., SUNY Ulster will host an outdoor screening of the 1986 classic film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” starring Matthew Broderick on the soccer field of its Stone Ridge campus.
This event is free and open to the public, with donations accepted at the event for the Ulster Community College Foundation’s Lights for Learning Emergency Student Fund, which provides SUNY Ulster students with emergency grants, loans, and scholarships that are often pivotal for students to continue on their educational paths.
According to Foundation Executive Director Lorraine Salmon, “I have witnessed time and again how the generous donations to our Lights for Learning program have kept a student from having to withdraw from college due to an unforeseen financial emergency.”
There will be free popcorn for all guests. In addition, a food truck will be selling snacks and meals commencing at 7 p.m. Guests may bring picnic blankets and/or lawn chairs for the movie screening that starts at 8 p.m.
