MassBay litmag is one of the best

lumière, MassBay Community College’s literary magazine, has placed third in the Community College Humanities Association 2019 National Literary Magazine Competition for small colleges in the Eastern Division. lumière has been illuminating creative writing, illustrations, photos, and artwork from students, faculty, and staff since 2016. This is the second time lumière has placed in this national competition—last year, MassBay placed second for small colleges in the Eastern Division.

“Many thanks to the lumière staff for all the time, energy and love that you put into each issue; the MassBay Foundation and Office of Student Development for your generous support; and to all of the members of our community who put their work out into the world,” said MassBay Associate Professor of English and lumière faculty sponsor, Matt Walsh. “There would be no magazine without you!”

The magazine staff collects submissions throughout the year and publishes in the spring with a campus-wide unveiling party, complete with contributors reading their works to the community. The spring 2019 issue featured short-stories, poems, photography, drawings, and other art that made up the 52-page award-winning magazine.

“Working on lumière has been a very rewarding experience,” said lumière Senior Editor and MassBay Liberal Arts English major, Kelvin Telon. “I’m happy to have met everyone I’ve worked with, and it’s an amazing experience putting works of art from the community together into a magazine. We’re proud of everyone’s work that goes into each issue, and I learned that the final issue is always a pleasant surprise.”

The eastern division of the Community College Humanities Association (CCHA) is comprised of all the New England states, Washington D.C., Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Puerto Rico. According to the CCHA website, this is the “only national organization for humanities faculty and administrators in two-year colleges. It is dedicated to strengthening and growing the humanities in two-year colleges as well as creating awareness of the value of humanities education for students, parents, employers, and members of the community.”

lumière is currently accepting submissions for the spring 2020 issue. The deadline for students, faculty, and staff to enter their creative work is March 1, 2020, but early submissions are greatly appreciated. Please send submissions to litmag@massbay.edu.
