New exhibit at SUNY Ulster

SUNY Ulster brings the inaugural show by the International Society of Antiquaries, titled “Collective Expeditions,” to the Muroff Kotler Visual Arts Gallery from November 8 to December 13. An opening reception will be held on Friday, November 8, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Muroff Kotler Visual Arts Gallery in Vanderlyn Hall, room 265. This event is free and open to the public.

The International Society of Antiquaries is a league of artists who are bound by a desire to look back in order to look forward. “Collective Expeditions” features painting, works on paper, sculpture, and installation. Although the artists have diverse practices, their work fits together in complex and interesting ways that speak to the importance of understanding our past—sometimes as far back as prehistory—in order to comprehend who we are as a species and where we are going. The works reference tribal, shamanic, ancestral, and contemporary art. Members of the International Society of Antiquaries presenting in this exhibit are Kyle Cottier, Olivia Baldwin, Elisa Pritzker, and Greg Slick.

The International Society of Antiquaries is a multidisciplinary society established in 2018, committed to the scholarship and preservation of material culture and sites of historic value, as well as fostering collaboration between artists, esotericists, archaeologists, and anthropologists. The Society, comprised of noted experts in their respective fields, presents exhibitions that both remove the veils from long-buried cultures and celebrate their mystery by illuminating connections between current phenomena in the arts and material culture of ancient and prehistoric peoples.

The Muroff Kotler Visual Arts Gallery at SUNY Ulster serves as a center for creative activity at the College and within the community. It also functions as an environment for teaching, performing, and exhibiting. The Muroff Kotler Visual Arts Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and is closed on college holidays.
