This Week in Podcasting

This Week in Podcasting, I try to do something different with the Real Journalism podcast and I think it works — I record in first-person, as if I am attending a Thanksgiving dinner at someone’s house. The characters I meet are a conglomeration of all of the people I’ve met at family dinners over the years. Don’t worry — I’m not referring to you in particular (or am I?).

Names have been changed to protect the smug and smarmy, the trashy and cheap. And, for the first time in awhile, I use ambient noise in this podcast to create mood.

But not all of the background noise is computer-generated. Another interesting thing happened while I was recording: I had my car window open and a local elementary school was just letting out, so there are lots of children’s noises in the background, as well; totally appropriate for a podcast that will send you back in time — to that dysfunctional family gathering in 1983…
