Attend a Black History Month event at your community college

Every community college in our region is having Black History Month events. We encourage you to attend at least one each year, in remembrance of the myriad contributions of African-Americans to the history of United States. Here are some of the events we were notified of as of press time:

At Hostos Community College, in the Bronx, attend “Celebrating Distinguished Black Leaders and Student Scholars” on Feb. 18, 12:30 p.m., in the Hostos Café. The event is honoring Vanessa Gibson, NYC Councilwoman and Una Clarke, CUNY Trustee. RSVP by Feb. 17.

With LaGuardia Community College in Queens, join a “Drum Circle” on Feb. 27, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 35-18 37th St. in Astoria. In honor of Black History Month, LAGCC is organizing an off-campus trip to the Wula Drum studio. It is an engaging team building activity that is rooted in the music and dance of the African diaspora. Each individual will be given a drum and the program is designed to educate, empower, and entertain. There are no musical capabilities required.

At Queensborough Community College, there will be a “Black Inventions Exhibit for Black History Month” on Feb. 11, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. in the Student Union Lounge. This is a multimedia presentation, which pays tribute to Black inventors and innovators. The exhibit will reveal many surprising facts, and highlights African-American accomplishments in the fields of Science, Aerospace Communication, Health Care, Agriculture, Transportation, and Engineering. The aim of the exhibit is not only to give credit to the inventors, but to inspire others to believe that anything is possible. Over 150 authentic artifacts are represented in the collection and include: Patent designs, personal letters, rare photographs, brief biographies of Black American inventors and video documentaries. This exhibit is free for all students, faculty and staff to attend. The event is open to the public.

At Bronx Community College on Feb. 20 at 12 noon in the RSBC Playhouse, there will be a discussion titled “Did Lincoln Really Free the Slaves.”

At Guttman Community College in Manhattan, hear “Who Can Say the ‘N’ Word?” on Feb. 18, 11:30 a.m., led by Dr. Marcus Allen.

In recognition of Black History Month, The SUNY Ulster Campus Life Multicultural Series will be presenting Hip Hop artist JB!! Aka Dirty Moses & DJ Trumastr (pictured) on Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. in the Muroff Kotler Visual Arts Gallery, Vanderlyn Hall, room 265 on the Stone Ridge campus. There will be a Video Rebroadcast at the Kingston Center of SUNY Ulster, located at 94 Mary’s Avenue, Kingston, NY on Feb. 18, 4:30 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.

At Nassau Community College, discuss “The State of Black Men in Higher Education” on Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. in CCB 252-253. It is presented by Dr. John Osae-Kwapong, Associate Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness and Strategic Planning.
