Masked, logged in, and socially distanced, Columbia-Greene Community College’s second-year Nursing students are the first to return to campus for the Fall semester, officially marking the start of the 2020 academic year.

The students returned to campus the week of August 24 to complete lab-based coursework on specific, scheduled days within a two-week period, separated into groups of no more than seven students.
According to C-GCC Professor of Nursing Anna Cortese, R.N., M.S.N., the second-year Nursing group is modeling protocols that all students attending classes on campus will be asked to adopt when all classes begin on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
“They all complete a COVID-19 pre-screening via a mobile app prior to arriving on campus, have been instructed to wear a mask, and are logged in prior to entering the building,” she said, noting that Nursing students also take on an extra set of precautions, assembling outside while utilizing markers delineating appropriate social distance.
“Students are be granted entrance to the building by faculty who lead them to the lab, where they are instructed to perform hand hygiene and given directions to their work areas,” she added. “PPE is worn, and social distancing is maintained in the labs at all times.”
Cortese added that procedures continue after class, as student prepare to leave.
“When the students are ready to leave, they clean and disinfect their work area as directed, perform hand hygiene, and leave through the designated door,” she explained. “A faculty member ‘directs traffic’ in order to avoid congestion in the hall or labs.”
