Mohawk Valley Community College student Nicholas Latham of Watertown received an honorable mention in the Best of SUNY Art Exhibition, a showcase of work by student artists from across SUNY’s 64 campuses.
Latham, an Illustration major, was honored for the charcoal piece, “Edwards Unspoken Words” (pictured).
The work featured in the Best of SUNY Exhibition was chosen by each student’s campus art department, and selected work has been on display at the H. Carl McCall Building in Albany since December 2022. The traditional areas of drawing, ceramics, painting, sculpture, photography, and printmaking are included, as well as non-traditional forms, such as mixed media, graphic design, and digitally produced works.
“It is inspiring to be able to witness first-hand the creativity of the next generation of artists who are honing their craft right here at SUNY,” said SUNY Chancellor John B. King, Jr. “As our society becomes more technologically advanced, it is important to remember there is still a place for the arts and humanities, which can expose students to a broad array of perspectives, allowing them to become more well-rounded individuals. Art is a form of expression that empowers by providing outlets for individuals to process and express their emotions; through art, we can form a deeper connection, a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us.”
MVCC’s School of Art offers programs in Digital Animation, Digital Media and Marketing, Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography, and Video Production. Instruction is designed to provide students with tools in visual literacy, hands-on technical skills, and a strong background in theoretical and historical knowledge.
