This Week in Podcasting: On newspapers, Orson Welles and More!

Ah, summer is just about here, and it’s time to record some podcasts.

I do my podcasts through the CampusXM brand, and you can get these podcasts directly by going to CampusXM.com, or just type CampusXM in any podcast app. You should have a podcast app on your smartphone. Look for it!

Or download now:

Here’s one I did on mid-career Orson Welles, in particular when he went on “I Love Lucy.” I also talk about “The Strain,” a vampire/zombie/sci-fi four-season series now on Hulu that will infect you.

And here’s one I did on print newspapers. I examine my local paper and determine the real threat to its existence is not necessarily its lack of advertising. More so, it may be its staff’s poor morale, printing and distribution. How will smaller papers survive in the future as printing plants shutter?

I also wonder why newspapers were so stupid, undermining their own futures by putting content for free on the web.

For laughs, I talk about my love for old Casey Kasem “America’s Top 40” broadcasts from the 1970s and 1980s. They play them on SiriusXM on weekends. I sit and listen on the edge of my seat, wondering what will be No. 1, even though this info is easy to Google. And I reveal the top Beatles song, as voted on by SiriusXM fans. It’s not what you think.

I also have some laughs talking about two recent journalism reporting assignments I had — one on a cow farm — and how bees got into my house.

These podcasts are solo, unstructured and without ads. I aim to be affable, honest and informative, also offering journalism-related insights with my humor. They are casual recordings. Some of them are made while I’m driving.

Have a podcast topic you’d like to hear covered, or any feedback in general? Please write to campusxm@cccn.us.

Thank you for listening!
