Holiday Hoops Clinics

Mohawk Valley Community College will host Junior Hawks Holiday Hoops Clinics for children in kindergarten through eighth grade in the Jorgensen Athletic and Event Center at the College’s Utica Campus, 1101 Sherman Drive.

There will be two sessions: Session 1 is from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 21 and 22, and Session 2 is from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday and Friday, Jan. 2 and 3. The cost is $40 for each two-day clinic or $70 for both clinics. Supplemental camp insurance is included in the registration fee.

The clinics, staffed by MVCC men’s and women’s coaches, assistant coaches, and players, as well as area college and high school coaches, are designed to teach kids the fundamentals of basketball. Campers are placed in age- and skill-appropriate groups to foster learning and interest, and youth baskets will be available for some age sections. A typical day at camp includes skills instruction for shooting, passing, dribbling, defense, and rebounding; games with coach point guards; individual instruction in small groups; and age-appropriate contests and activities. Campers should bring their own sneakers, shorts, and water bottle.

Payment is due by the first day of the clinic. Make checks payable and send to: Mohawk Valley Community College, Athletics – Junior Hawks Basketball, 1101 Sherman Drive, Utica, N.Y. 13501. Preregistration is encouraged to secure your spot. Please register online at https://www2.mvcc.edu/forms/sportscamps/mens_basketball. Coach St. Croix started the Junior Hawks program in the spring of 2017. The program teaches children the skills of basketball in a fun experience that includes stations with MVCC coaches and local high school coaches, and visits from MVCC’s mascot, Mo Hawk. This is St. Croix’s 13th year as Head Coach of the Hawks. Under his leadership, the Hawks won their first ever Regional Title in 2016, have qualified for the post season every year, and finished sixth in the national tournament. Before coming to MVCC, St. Croix was head basketball coach at Jefferson Community College and an assistant at St. John Fisher College.
